The French Press, or Coffee Plunger, is a consistently reliable way to brew a rich and syrupy cup of coffee. We’ve broken down this classic brewing method so that you can achieve an elegant heavy-bodied coffee in just 7 simple steps.

What you'll need

  • Plunger 3 cup / 8 cups
  • Grinder
  • Scale
  • Kettle
  • Filtered water
  • Nuddy Coffee

STEP 1

Boil a kettle of filtered water.

The ideal water temperature is between 93 and 96 degrees celsius. If you have a regular kettle, bring it to boil and then leave it to sit for a few minutes whilst grinding your coffee.

STEP 2

Put the glass chamber on the scale.

Take out the plunger filter, and place the glass chamber onto your scales.

STEP 3

Add ground coffee to your plunger chamber.

The grind size should be a similar size to fine table salt.

- Add 18g of coffee for a 3 cup plunger
- Add 60g of coffee for a 8 cup plunger

STEP 4

Pour hot water

If you don’t have scales, just fill the plunger chamber up until it’s almost full. If you have a scale, use 300g of hot water in a 3 cup plunger or 1000g of hot water in an 8 cup plunger.

STEP 5

Let it sit for 4 minutes.

Patience is key to extracting an optimal brew that’s full of flavour. No stirring is required.

STEP 6

Break the crust.

Use a table spoon to push down the crust. Enjoy the aroma!

Tip: Scoop out any coffee that’s floating on the top for a cleaner taste.

STEP 7

Press down.

Press down gently on the plunger.

Enjoy!
